Homework Policy – Overview for Teachers
New Board Policy (6154 BP) and revised Administrative Regulations (AR) clarify homework requirements and provide guidelines for teachers.
Summary of key points:
All teachers should review/revise written homework policies to adhere to Board Policy and ARs.
- Grades 9 – 12 o Average of 30 minutes per core content class – Courses other than core content may assign homework. Effort should be made to avoid weekend and holiday assignments.
- Long-term projects may be assigned
- Nightly homework will relate and extend concepts aligned with course curriculum. Amount and levels of nightly homework should stay within the district guidelines.
- Board Policy states that it is the responsibility of students to complete all assigned homework on time. However, “A pupil shall not have his or her grade reduced or lose academic credit for any absence or absences excused pursuant to Section 48205 if missed assignments and tests that can reasonably be provided are satisfactorily completed within a reasonable period of time.” (Education Code 48980)
- Students who miss assignments shall be given the opportunity to make up work, within a reasonable period of time, for full or reduced credit, as determined by the classroom teacher.
- Exceptions exist for Honors/AP/IB course assignments.
