Want to try an engaging instructional tactic that is easy to implement, fun for students and teachers and works in any subject at any level? Try the Question Formulation Technique. This is a great companion to the Essential Question. You can try it on your own by visiting the Right Question Institute’s website, or just view the video below. You could also learn more about it during the upcoming March 12 PD sessions.
Basically, you provide a word, phrase, statement or stimulus to the class. You do NOT ask a question. In groups, the students write as many questions as they can think of about the prompt. They then classify the questions as closed ended and open ended. You may have them practice changing closed to open, and open to closed. Eventually they will choose their best questions and share with the rest of the class. Critical thinking explodes, and the teacher is ALWAYS amazed at the great questions that arise.
