Handbook Highlight - Discipline Procedure

DISCIPLINE - STUDENT REFERRAL PROCEDURE

Discipline should first be handled by the classroom teacher who is responsible for the control of the students in their class.  Discipline should be directed towards a positive change in behavior, attitude and work habits on the part of the student.  Individual student/teacher conference, parent conferences and phone calls or teacher detention should be used to promote behavior change before the student is referred to a counselor/administrator.  The teacher shall have parent contact to remediate bad behavior prior to sending a referral.
When a student has demonstrated inappropriate behavior within their class, teachers are encouraged to request parents attend a portion of the instructional day, as per education code 48900.1 and PYLUSD Board Policy 5114.2(a).
As per Labor Code 230.7 (Parent to School), no employer shall discharge or in any manner discriminate against, an employee who is the parent/guardian of a pupil, for taking time off to appear in the school, as requested by that school.
If all attempts to make positive change in behavior have failed, the student should then be referred to the counseling office.  Referrals should be made before there is a deterioration of rapport between the student and the teacher.
