House and Opportunities
Valencia High School implemented the House and Opportunity Program Endeavor (H.O.P.E.) to assist struggling freshmen and sophomores. The House program currently serves 50 freshmen who were at the bottom of the class ranking for their eighth-grade year. This number reflects a decrease in students served due to budget cuts. The Opportunity Program is a voluntary program that provides support for sophomores who are at least 30 credits deficient towards graduation. The success of these two programs over the past three years is shown below with increased percentage of students improving their GPA, reduced truancy, and over 100 credits recovered.
GEAR UP
The GEAR UP program at Valencia High School was formed as a fellowship of students dedicated to supporting and encouraging each other towards the goal of graduating high school and pursuing higher education. GEAR UP is a program designed to assist at-risk students to work through the problems they may face at school, at home, and in the community. GEAR UP class offers activities that promote educational and socialization skills. Criteria for placement in the program include a G.P.A. of 1.89 or below, a history of attendance problems and/or behavioral problems, and a willingness on the part of the student to be held accountable for personal actions and success. Students in GEAR UP class have tutoring support and class time to work on homework assignments. They do weekly grade checks and aim for a G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher. Success is also gauged by improved attendance and improved behavior.
